Tirkandi (library)
At Lockleys North Primary school we believe that all learners can and will be successful. Our vision is to develop a community of empowered learners who strive for success. Our values shape our vision, beliefs and way of being. Respect, Care and Concern, Honesty and Pursuit of Excellence guide every part of our culture, relationships, and teaching and learning.
Our library offers a large and diverse collection of engaging fiction, non-fiction, and picture story books that support students’ learning, imagination, and love of reading.
Borrowing Times
All classes attend a timetabled weekly library lesson. During this time, students are encouraged to borrow books, use the library catalogue to search for resources, and enjoy quiet reading.
Library lessons support students to develop independent reading habits and take responsibility for selecting and managing their own books.
Opening Times
Our library is open every day for students and their families on:
- Before school – 8:30am – 8:50am
- After school – 3:10pm – 3:30pm
Senior students may also use the library during recess on Tuesday and Thursday to complete work or read.
Library Monitors
Each term, selected senior students have the opportunity to become Library Monitors. This leadership role encourages students to develop their learner qualities, build responsibility, and contribute positively to the school community.
Loan Limits
Borrowing limits vary by year level:
- Reception: 4 books
- Years 1-4: 8 books
- Years 5-6: 10 books
- Parents: up to 10 books
Please note: The borrowing numbers listed above are a guide. Classroom teachers may adjust how many books students can borrow at a time based on their class routines and individual needs.
Borrowing Duration
All items are loaned for a maximum of two weeks.
To borrow books, students need a library bag (Reception and Years 1–2) and must have no overdue items. Students are encouraged to manage their loans responsibly and borrow regularly.
Overdue, Lost or Damaged Books
If a library book is overdue, lost, or significantly damaged for more than two weeks, a replacement fee of $15 may apply. If a lost book is later returned, the fee will be fully reimbursed.
Students will not be able to borrow additional books until overdue items are returned or payment is made. All fees collected go directly towards replacing books so the library collection can continue to be enjoyed by all students.
Community Engagement
Our library actively promotes a love of reading through a range of engaging programs and events, including the Reader of the Month Award, the Premier’s Reading Challenge, Scholastic Book Club, National Simultaneous Storytime, Book Week, and the Scholastic Book Fair.
The library recognises and celebrates student reading achievements through our Reader of the Month Award. This initiative encourages a positive reading culture by acknowledging students who demonstrate enthusiasm for reading, regular borrowing habits, and engagement with books throughout the month. Awards are presented at school assemblies, and recipients are given the opportunity to choose a new book for the school library, which includes a special acknowledgement inside the book recognising their contribution.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) encourages students to develop regular reading habits and explore a wide variety of books. Students are invited to complete a reading record by reading 8 PRC-listed books and 4 additional books of their own choice, with a total of 12 books. Completed forms are returned to the library, and students receive certificates or medals, with recognition increasing each year they successfully complete the challenge.
The Scholastic Book Club provides families with two catalogues each term, allowing books to be purchased online and delivered to the school for collection. Every order supports the library through a rewards program, helping us purchase new books and resources for students to enjoy.
Students also take part in National Simultaneous Storytime, a nationwide event held each May where children across Australia read the same picture book at the same time, helping to foster a shared enjoyment of literature and storytelling.
Each year, students participate in Book Week, celebrating Australian authors, illustrators, and stories through themed activities, a costume parade, and other special events that inspire creativity and a passion for reading.
Our annual Scholastic Book Fair transforms the library into a pop-up bookstore for one week. Families are invited to browse and purchase books, stationery, posters, and more, while also supporting the growth of our school library collection.
